That was a blip, and he actually made some minor structural improvement in the systems I'm familiar with. The folks in our neck of the woods have been consistently brainwashed, beginning in childhood, since at least the Reagan era

I guess that’s fair since I used “awaken” and it was a one-off election.

Strickland was Appalachian. He had street-, or rather, hill-cred that none of these other suburbanite state democrats do.

Does passing this $600 million handout for the Browns mean they still have to come up with the other $600 million? I think I heard them say they wanted $400 million from Brook Park. How would that be committed? By council vote or an election? (Personally, I think that's insane — hopefully they learned their lesson from Eastlake's failure to be able to pay for the Captains stadium as promised.) What about the $200 million remainder that Cuyahoga County is saying it won't cover and had better not, considering our high rate of child poverty, crumbling housing, defunded schools and libraries, and high rate of maternal/infant death which I believe the budget bill is also stripping of funding. Thank you for calling Marty Sweeney slimy! I've felt that since the first time I met him when I photographed him for a Scene profile some 15 years ago. He is a slime ball indeed. And not very smart.

I know. And what a learning curve! When she first came to the Cuyahoga Democrat Women's Caucus for endorsement in her first state house race, she came across as sort of clueless (she had referred to a "family background of public service" so I asked her in the Q&A for examples. She came back with lame things like helping teach younger kids in her Irish dancing school.) The only justification she could give for her run was "we need younger voices." We didn't endorse anyone — the other two candidates were a slovenly-looking lawyer whose name I forget and a Bernie Bro who got in a fight with one of our members when he refused to say whether he was involved with the Bernie Bros who wreaked havoc at the Democratic National Convention in Philly.

When she came back the next time, boy, had she gotten up to speed! She particularly was involved in advocacy for voting rights, my pet issue, and she was so knowledgable. Also she is a strong advocate for reproductive rights and her father is not. At a women's rights rally, she also confessed — for the first time in public, I believe she said — that she had been raped. She was very emotional. I remember Juanita Brent and a couple of the other women onstage stepping up to comfort her. You have to wonder if she'd ever shared this with her father.
