Expect the Worst
And somehow the Columbus Division of Police will still find a way to shock you.
Last Friday, Franklin County Sheriff Deputy Jason Meade fatally shot 23-year-old Casey Goodson three times in the back while Goodman was walking into his grandmother’s house to eat Subway after a dentist appointment.
His 72-year-old grandmother and two toddlers witnessed the shooting and found Goodson’s keys still in the lock as his blood pooled underneath his uneaten sandwich.
Deputy Meade was on the Northeast side to serve an arrest warrant for a man not named Casey Goodson Jr. Police claimed he “waved a gun at SWAT officers,” without failing to mention that even if he did that — and I do not believe he did — that he would have been well within his rights as an Ohioan permitted to carry a concealed weapon.
I do not hide my distaste for police officers. I expect the worst from them at all time, especially when it involves the murder of a minority. Yet somehow even I am mystified by what we saw yesterday.
Mayor Andrew Ginther, that geeky freak who lives in a $525,000 house in the suburbs and refuses to ever show his doughy face in public, said early in the morning that the city had reached an agreement with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to oversee the investigation into just how Deputy Meade came to mistake a Subway sub for a pistol.
This should happen every time a cop shoots a civilian dead. But at least this was an unexpected development of good news.
Or so I thought.
Attorney General Dave Yost intervened later in the day and scrapped the state’s takeover.
“We received a referral to take a three day old officer-involved shooting case. Not knowing all the reasons as to why so much time has passed before the case was referred to BCI, we cannot accept this case.
The Attorney General said that BCI was able to investigate officer-involved shootings – a process that begins with a request for assistance, processing of a crime scene and a thorough investigation. BCI has an existing MOU with CPD, as they know that BCI is their first call when an incident occurs. BCI is the first call because we cannot be the subject matter experts unless we’re on scene from the beginning to document the evidence of what happened from the start. Three days later after the crime scene has been dismantled and the witness have all dispersed does not work.”
Dave Yost does not have the stones to prosecute a cop for murder in broad daylight. But you’re rarely going to see him toss an entire department under the bus like he did with this statement.
Hanlon’s razor states never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. Well, the Rooster’s razor states when it comes to cops, don’t think maliciousness and stupidity are mutually exclusive traits.
You know it’s going bad for the Columbus Division of Police and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office because it’s been over 72 hours and they haven’t found some petty criminal conviction from years ago to leak to the press to incubate the notion he deserved to die because he once got caught shoplifting or smoking a joint or whatever.
The gun they recovered, if they recovered one at all, was legally owned and it’s hard to say a man posed an imminent threat when he had his back turned to the deputy and a Subway sack in one hand.
But now we are back to square one, where members of the notorious Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #9, a union that has been accused and successfully convicted in civil court of being racist towards black cops, are investigating one of their white members for the stone cold murder of a black man.
So who is Deputy Jason Meade? Well, would you believe he’s a former Marine who saw “action” (read: committed war crimes) in Iraq only to come home and spread Jesus’ gospel of mass murder to awe-struck youth at Bible Camp?
The Rosedale Free Will Baptist Church took down their entire website hours after Meade unleashed Hell on a man who simply wanted to eat lunch at his grandmother’s house. (I’m suddenly reminded that the Baptists are currently reckoning with their church’s long and storied history of racism. Some churches more than others, if you can believe that.)
The Rosedale Free Will Baptist Church forgot the internet is forever, though it’s easy to see why they moved to quick to scrub this fawning profile of Deputy Meade from its website before an autopsy of his victim could even be performed.
Here is a taste of that profile from the Internet Archive, via Twitter user @Lena10E:
Kick the Crap out of the Bad Guys

Jason Meade is a tough guy.
He was a United States Marine for eight years and saw action in Iraq in 2005. He works on a S.W.A.T. Team for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and is on a U.S. Marshall task force. He loves catching bad guys and putting them in jail.
He’s a combination of John Wayne, Chuck Norris and Sylvester Stallone.
…
But I will always have a fond memory of Jason. It was something he said during a message. It was so profound and honest. He just returned to camp from work where he said to the audience during a sermon with a proud smile, “We kicked the crap out of the bad guys today.” The crowd cheered.
Yiiiiiiiiiiiikes.
This is my beef with most cops: They consider themselves the judge, jury and executioner on whom they label “the bad guys,” despite us having an entire justice system erected to determine that fact post-arrest.
There is a reason so many police unions enthusiastically supported a career criminal in President Business Deals. It’s because he would never turn off their spigot of decommissioned military equipment or stand in their way of mistreating “the bad guys.”
Look how these pigs reacted when Trump encouraged them to “not be too nice” to “thugs” (read: black and brown people).
Deputy Meade killed a man four days ago in front of his grandmother and two toddlers. Casey Goodman Jr. has zero criminal background. He was not even the target of the arrest warrant that Meade and his jack-booted cohorts came to arrest in the first place.
Of course, Deputy Meade could be vindicated if he or his colleagues had worn body cameras. After all, cameras protect citizens and cops from being the victim of a distorted narrative in public opinion. Apparently none of them felt comfortable with filming their work that day.
In any other profession, Meade would already be sitting in jail on homicide charges at the least. Hell, when I bartended, I lived in terror of somebody I had served driving home drunk and T-boning a grandma because then suddenly it’s my ass on the line.
The city will drag its feet on this investigation for as long as possible. The cops will stonewall more than they already have by not summoning BCI to the scene in the immediate aftermath. They will try their hardest to turn this into a “he said/he said” type of thing and hey, don’t cops have a hard enough job as it is? They know that the anger will dissipate among the masses the further we move away from this latest outrage.
These suburban liberals need to pay attention to more than their property values and the occupant of the White House. There is bonafide evil walking amongst us in Columbus and they have badges. They would rather punish and enslave than protect and serve.
None of them live here; they siphon their robust wages, benefits and pensions and take our money into distant communities with nice schools and fully funded infrastructure. I don’t want to hear any statements about “justice for Goodson” coming from the likes of Mayor Ginther or Shannon Harden.
Talking is the easy part. It’s a lot harder to gut a police union’s contract and walk the talk. If they had the courage for that kind of work, they would have done it already and Casey Goodson would still be alive.
His blood is on their hands just as much as it is Deputy Meade’s.
