The City of Kings made international news this week. Unfortunately it’s a rule of law that any viral news to come of Marion never reflects well on the place I call home.
I wrote about the awful political opinions of the first Marion’s first coronavirus victim on Friday in a dispatch for paid subscribers. I didn’t name the man out of respect to his family and still got a few people wanting to kick my ass in my mentions.
The Daily Mail, a Tory newspaper published in Britain, picked up the news of John McDaniel’s death and ran it under the headline, “Ohio man, 60, who blasted COVID-19 lockdown as 'political ploy' and said stay-at-home orders were 'b*****t' dies after contracting coronavirus.”
Hard to think of a more humiliating way to die during a pandemic than getting roasted by a Tory paper for your failure to understand rudimentary epidemiology.
I would feel bad for him if he didn’t insist on calling COVID-19 the “Wuhan Flu” after it had killed 7,000 people worldwide. (Marion TMZ reports McDaniel and his friends hosted a card game in late March in which an attendee came to play despite awaiting results from his coronavirus test. That man was positive and infected six others from that card game alone.)
The hits didn’t stop there. Thanks to our governor’s inaction, nearly 75% of prisoners at Marion Correctional Institute tested positive for coronavirus, propelling Marion County to the No. 1 hotspot in the world.
The sad thing is I’m not even surprised. I would have had no problem believing you if you had told me back in February that Marion County would become the No. 1 source for viral internet stories. That’s just how the city rolls. It’d be unbelievable if I hadn’t lived there for half my life.
Speaking of plagues, the Factory of Sadcast returned yesterday to break down everything you needed to know about which athletic fat dude the Browns should draft Thursday:
I have never been so desperate to have a 7-9 football team back in my life. The troubling thing is I’m starting to buy into the hype that we could make the playoffs this year! God help my soul.
DEWINE SOARS HIGH WHILE TRUMP DRAGS IN CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE POLL
[via u/KStJ103]
The Million Moron March descended once again on Columbus yesterday. You might have seen similar pro-coronavirus rallies from around the country and grew worried that there was a growing sentiment in this country that killing hundreds of thousands of people would be worth the price of “re-opening” the economy.
It’s an easy mindset to slip into. Nonetheless it’s far from reality:
If media outlets are going to continue giving these kooks a platform, hopefully they at least make it clear these rallies are nothing more than fringe elements of society with nothing better to do during a pandemic than stand around strangers outside the statehouse and whine about not being able to get a massage or whatever the fuck.
Governor Mike DeWine has an 80% approval rating with how he’s handled coronavirus. Only 46% of Ohioans approve of Donald Trump’s handing of the virus, which makes me hopeful the average American voter is starting to learn President Business Deals spent January and February golfing, campaigning and enriching himself with lavish parties at Mar-a-Lago instead of preparing for the pandemic.
Coronavirus has chiseled away at Trump’s fervent base, which is why his team went back to the old racism well last night in attempt to stop the bleeding:
The president routinely talks shit on Twitter that he can’t back up. The White House refused to answer questions last night, so we’ll have to see what fascists like Steven Miller scheme to do during a pandemic.
Regardless, it seems like a move that could come back to haunt a country that deeply depends on migrant labor:
New rule: Anyone supporting this incompetent racist regime forfeits their right to be treated by immigrant medical staff should they be hospitalized with coronavirus. People would probably see the foolishness in their ignorance real quick.
POLICE SET-UP TXT LINE FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE VICTIMS
The worldwide coronavirus quarantine has caused a spike in domestic violence. In France, police moved victims to hotels and distributed code words to signal for help while visiting the pharmacy.
America unsurprisingly isn’t responding that robustly. It’s still nice to see the police being proactive in Columbus.
From Debbie Holmes of radio.wosu.org:
Starting this week, domestic violence survivors can reach the City Attorney office’s domestic violence & stalking unit by sending a text message to 614-653-8075. Callers must provide their name, when it’s safe to communicate, and an email or phone number.
“We wanted to make sure that victims of domestic violence, while they are sheltering in place sometimes with their abusers, we want them to know that help and hope is still available,” says City Attorney Zach Klein.
Klein says Columbus Police reported in March a 19% increase in domestic violence calls. Police also blame three homicides in three weeks on domestic abusers.
Those numbers are brutal, and they’ll only get worse as material conditions worsen as the crisis deepens. I’ve had my criticisms of Zach Klein in the past and will no doubt in the future but he deserves honest praise for developing this tool. Now it’s about making sure as many domestic violence victims as possible know abotu the resource.
TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO REQUEST YOUR PRIMARY BALLOT
You are running out of time if you want to vote in next week’s mail-in primary. Your ballot must be postmarked by April 27th, which means you need to contact your Board of Elections ASAP to request your absentee ballot.
From limaohio.com:
Time is running out if you haven’t yet voted for the April 28 primary. Remember, due to the coronavirus, polling stations will not be open.
People who have yet to cast a ballot will need to apply for an absentee ballot by noon Saturday. You can apply for an absentee ballot by printing an application form that’s available online or calling your county elections board to request one. Once a ballot is received and completed, it must be postmarked by April 27, or it can be directly delivered to the voter’s county election board on Election Day.
If you voted early before the March 17 election was canceled, you do not need to do anything.
Please make sure to vote in the primary! The hobgoblins that run our state made this as confusing to ensure as few people vote as possible. Shove their contempt down their throats! (Unless you plan to vote for self-dealin’ Rep. Joyce Beatty, in which case it’s best you sit this one out until November.)
