DR. DEATH DEALING WITH 15 TO LIFE

Mt. Carmel Hospitals confirmed seven cases of Legionnaire’s disease last week, and somehow the next week delivered a worse P.R. catastrophe.
A 43-year-old doctor accused of murdering 25 patients with fentanyl made his first court appearance after turning himself in.
From Laura Bischoff of daytondailynews.com
COLUMBUS — A Columbus area doctor is charged with 25 counts of murder by over prescribing powerful opioids, according to an indictment filed by Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien.
Dr. William Husel, 43, is accused by prosecutors of murders between February 2015 and November 2018, when he was removed from patient care by Mount Carmel Health System in Columbus. O’Brien did not offer a motive for the deaths.
Husel pleaded not guilty and his lawyer said the doctor did not intend to kill anyone.
If convicted, Husel could face 15 years to life in prison on each count. His bond was set at $1 million.
If I murdered 25 people, I would probably flee the country at the first sign of trouble it’s not like I’d be a free man ever again.
This isn’t Husel’s first time in court.
From Theodore Decker, Holly Zachariah and JoAnne Viviano of dispatch.com:
Husel, now 43, was a captain on the St. Ignatius basketball team his senior year and graduated in 1994. He soon found himself in trouble after enrolling at what was then Wheeling Jesuit College in West Virginia.
Husel pleaded guilty in 1996 to a federal misdemeanor charge after he stored a pipe bomb in a dorm room, a device he later used to blow up a trash can near a health and recreation center on the private school’s Wheeling campus.
Husel tried to frame another person for the crime by planting bomb-making materials in that person’s car, according to U.S. District Court documents filed in the 23-year-old case.
Decades later, a nurse who worked with him at Mount Carmel West hospital described him this week as even-keeled, someone who would be able to calmly direct staff members even if the hospital burned down.
Getting caught with a pipe bomb in college ain’t great but can possibly be explained. Attempting to frame somebody by planting bomb-making materials in their car is some psycho shit, though. Easy to see how this guy went to divorce court not once but twice.
But thanks to our system, Husel’s crimes will earn the headlines while his victims remain anonymous corpses he pumped full of heroin. (Yes, I know I’m guilty too. Let’s move on.)
Student Journalist Schools the Ohio State Beat

The Ohio State football beat is one of the most competitive in the country, so it’s always of note when the student newspaper beats everyone to a scoop involving a player being kicked off the team for an alleged rape.
From Edward Sutelan da Gawd of thelantern.com:
A former Ohio State running back and four-star recruit was suspended two days after he was listed as the suspect in a police report detailing a rape of a student in September, and later dismissed from the school for the allegations.
Brian Snead was found by a university investigation to have violated the code of student conduct with charges of non-consensual sexual intercourse and non-consensual sexual contact, however no criminal charges were filed, Ben Johnson, Ohio State spokesman, said in an email.
Snead was dismissed from the university on Nov. 27. It was reported by Derek Young of Rivals.com that he transferred to Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in January.
“Ohio State does not tolerate sexual assault,” Johnson said. “The safety and well-being of our community is our first priority. In this case, the individual was found in violation of our code of student conduct and removed from the university.”
Another example of murky ethics: There isn’t much that goes on with Ohio State that multiple reporters don’t know about because coaches be gossiping.
But reporters depend on coaches for access to information, and publishers aren’t inclined to kick a hornet’s nest that god forbid makes the fancy football factory look bad.
So the company line gets taken on Snead and nothing beyond Urban Meyer’s glib answers get published. Everybody forgets about it after the next week.
But not ol’ Edward Sutelan, who put in the legwork to publish an irrefutable report that every professional outlet had to write about because once it’s public those clicks will be got.
AMERICA: IT BE LIKE THAT SOMETIMES

Because our state and federal government refuses to take even the slightest step towards more sensible gun legislation, we now live in a world where we teach elementary school students what to do if a blood-thirsty monster wielding a military assault rifle comes into their school.
Do they work? No, of course not.
Enter Butler County.
From Michael Clark of daytondailynews.com:
BUTLER COUNTY — For the first time, a school security SWAT, fire and EMS exercise will include participants from every public school district in Butler County.
The active-shooter exercise will take place later this month on the Ross high school and middle school campus and will also include participants from local police departments, fire agencies and the Butler County Sheriff’s office.
Nearly 200 adults and students will participate.
According to officials at the Butler County Educational Services Center (BCESC) the four-hour exercise on June 18 will “simulate an active shooter at a board meeting while numerous activities are occurring throughout the campus, including sporting events, conferences, and athletic practices.”
America is the only country with these drills. Makes you think, for sure.
COLUMBUS TAKES BIG STEP TOWARDS CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM

I’m not in the business of praising prosecutors— except Queens District Attorney candidate Tiffany Cabán, who is about that revolution life — but I’m a big fan of Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein’s latest move.
From Bill Bush of dispatch.com:
Saying it’s time to challenge the status quo of over-incarceration and overcrowded jails, Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein has instructed city prosecutors to stop requesting cash bonds for most misdemeanor defendants charged with nonviolent crimes.
Instead, Klein’s office will request recognizance bonds that allow most people to be released from the Franklin County jail without having to post cash bail. Though what ultimately what happens to individuals will be up to judges, prosecutors’ recommendations often play a large role.
The United States is an outlier from the rest of the world when it comes to locking people up, Klein said in an interview Wednesday after his office made the announcement, “and I think we have to ask, “Are we truly safer than the rest of the world?
“The numbers speak for themselves,” he said. “If you’re innocent until proven guilty and you’re not a flight risk, why are you in jail?”
Prediction: Not separating poor people from their family and support network and surrounding them with hardened criminals and guards that despise them will do wonders for the justice system.
Progressive public policy in Ohio… it’s a beautiful thing, baby. The next step is eliminating cash bond for all non-violent offenses.
URINE TROUBLES COME TO OHIO

I knew a guy who once used fake urine to beat a series of drug tests. I may or may not have been that guy. Who’s to say? Not the cops.
Regardless, it appears the Ohio Legislature has finally arrived in 2008.
From the Associated Press via thechronicle.net:
State Rep. Theresa Gavarone, a Bowling Green Republican, introduced the bill banning synthetic urine Tuesday as the nation continues to struggle with an opioid crisis. Similar bans are already in place in at least 18 states. In Mississippi last year, it was dubbed the "Urine Trouble" bill.
Fabricated urine has become increasingly popular with drug users who use it to defeat drug screenings administered by employers, law enforcement and courts. It costs around $17 and comes with instructions for microwaving it to bring it to body temperature.
People will just turn to the internet, of course.
The only solutions are paying somebody to stare at a stranger’s genitals while they produce a urine sample or dismantling the invasive drug testing industry outside of workmen’s compensation cases.
Which one is the more productive path? It’s hard to say.
