It's Raining Feds in Dayton
36th-place man takes marathon ribbon meant for first-place woman, gun group lies to its members, and more.
C-B-J! C-B-J! C-B-J! Suck on that, Boston!
Folks, how about this goalie? They call him Bob, right? Bob! Big fella from Russia. Talk about a tank! We love him, don’t we? Simply the best. I’ll tell you one thing.. and this is something not a lot of people remember… but I haven’t seen Russian defense like that since the Battle of Stalingrad.
And what do we say to the Scumbag Brad Marchand? (Go to the 1:10 mark.)
Lock him up! Lock him up! Lock him up!
What is it with people name Brad? Cantankerous goons, every one.
FEDS CRACK DOWN ON CORRUPTION IN THE DYT
[Former state rep. Clayton Luckie]
I don’t make a habit out of lionizing the FBI unless they’re throwing corrupt politicians in the clink. Apparently the Feds caught a whiff of something funky in the Gem City, and a whole gang of fools — including a former state representative — are in trouble.
DAYTON — A covert, long-term investigation by federal agents into suspected public corruption in the Dayton area led to federal charges Tuesday against a former Dayton city commissioner and three other men.
Federal indictments were unsealed Tuesday against Joey D. Williams, a local bank executive and former city commissioner; former state representative Clayton Luckie; city of Dayton employee RoShawn Winburn and Brian Higgins, a local man who once owned a dead body hauling business.
“This is the first wave of indictments,” said Benjamin Glassman, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, at a press conference. “Now that the investigation is open and overt, I expect there to be more arrests and more charges going forward.”
My God, if you can’t trust the integrity of a guy who owns a dead body hauling business, whom can you trust!?
Mayor Nan Whaley says the city is cooperating fully with the investigation, as it should. I’m still salty these yahoos have soiled Dayton’s name. Whaley is a helluva candidate who has gubernatorial aspirations, and I can already see the Republicans running attack ads on the corruption, as if Nan were personally responsible.
Wait, hold on… I’m being told that’s already the case:
This from the party that had a House Speaker resign in disgrace in an ongoing FBI investigation. Yet I digress.
Clayton Luckie is probably the most heinous offender, as this isn’t his first rodeo.
From Thomas Gnau, Josh Sweigart and Laura Bischoff of daytondailynews.com:
According to the indictment, Luckie “devised, executed and participated in a scheme to defraud the city of Dayton and to obtain money and property by and under the custody and control of the city of Dayton, by means of materially false and fraudulent pretenses, representations and promises …”
Luckie is a long-time Dayton Democrat who served 10 years on the school board and seven years in the Ohio House. In 2012, investigators found that Luckie diverted roughly $130,000 from his campaign account for personal use while serving in the Ohio House.
In early 2013, he pleaded guilty to six counts of election falsification, one count of money laundering, one count of grand theft and one misdemeanor county of filing a false ethics statement.
Sounds like Luckie has dreamed his last scheme as a free man. This is a crime of avarice and a betrayal of public trust. The judge will throw the book at him given his past crimes.
COMMON-SENSE GUN CONTROL PROPOSAL FROM REPUBLICAN MELTS MINDS OF GUN GROUP
Gun rights groups in Ohio are used to getting their way. The first act of Mike DeWine’s administration was signing a law correcting ambiguous language in a past gun bill that accidentally banned some of the most popular death machines in the state.
So I’m sure when the Buckeye Firearms Association heard about Mike DeWine crafting a red flag law, they truly thought they were being punked. Limited gun control? In Ohio? Hahaha. This ain’t California!
From Randy Ludlow of dispatch.com:
Expressing alarm over recent fatal shootings in houses of worship, DeWine said Monday that he is working to come up with a bill that would permit judges to order the seizure of guns from people found to be a danger to themselves or others.
In a Tuesday email to members, Dean Rieck, executive director of the Buckeye Firearms Association, said the group contacted administration officials to express their alarm. “We have been told that the governor misspoke when pressed by the media about red flag laws,” he wrote.
“And we have been assured that there is NO red flag bill under consideration by this administration and there will NOT be one.”
DeWine did not misspeak and his staff is indeed working to draft a “red flag” bill, said Dan Tierney, the first-year Republican’s press secretary.
So either Buckeye Firearms lied to its members, DeWine lied to Buckeye Firearms, or DeWine is lying to the public.
I’ve got my money on Buckeye Firearms lying to its members. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never seen the point in paying a group to lie to me. But hey, Scientology is classified as a religion in America and doesn’t pay taxes, so maybe I’m in the wrong business.
IF THIS AIN’T A METAPHOR FOR LIFE
Christian Floyd, a 23-year-old analyst for Cardinal Health in Columbus, competed in his first marathon this weekend in Toledo. As he approached the finish line, he saw a “marathon winner” tape obviously meant for a guy in 36th place.
Except it wasn’t.
From David Briggs of toledoblade.com:
Amy Manning was all set to celebrate her victory as the top woman when suddenly — as the kids would say — she got Kanye’d. The 36th-place man unwittingly hustled past her on the home stretch and ran through the tape reserved for the women’s winner, depriving Manning of the photo-perfect finish.
“You asshole,” Manning shouted.
“Seriously!?” a race worker told the man.
From there, video of the to-do spread on social media — including on this newspaper’s Facebook page — with most opinions swerving to the extremes.
According to Briggs, Floyd said he felt “really bad” and profusely apologized to Manning, who had just won her first marathon. Race organizers had her re-enact her finish for the cameras.
LEFT WING OF HAMILTON COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY FIELDS CANDIDATE TO PRIMARY TRUMP RALLY-ATTENDING INCUMBENT
[Charmaine McGuffey]
I’m a big believer in primaries. Voters should have as many choices as possible in elections. Hamilton County Democratic voters will soon have a chance to oust an incumbent sheriff who “mistakenly” attended a Trump rally.
From Nick Swartsell of citybeat.com:
The former head of the Hamilton County Justice Center, Charmaine McGuffey, will launch a bid for Hamilton County sheriff May 15, according to an email invitation to the kick-off event.
The campaign will put the county's first female jail director in competition with fellow Democrat Sheriff Jim Neil, her former boss. Neil became the first Democrat elected sheriff in Hamilton County in nearly four decades in 2012. He proved popular enough to handily beat Republican Gary Lee in a bid for reelection, though he has also stoked frustration among some liberal fellow Democrats for an appearance at a campaign rally for President Donald Trump in West Chester in 2016, issues around immigrant detention at the Hamilton County jail and other flash points.
Neil has said he identifies as a conservative Democrat. He later called his appearance at the Trump rally a "mistake" and said he's more focused on being a law enforcement official than a politician.
Sheriffs have vast power. If you don’t believe me, here’s former Attorney General Jeff Sessions in 2018 (emphasis mine):
"I want to thank every sheriff in America. Since our founding, the independently elected sheriff has been the people's protector, who keeps law enforcement close to and accountable to people through the elected process. The office of sheriff is a critical part of the Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement."
Outing sheriff offices as critical cog of white supremacy would’ve been a career-ending scandal under a normal administration.
So, yeah, given the issues the control, it’s imperative progressives field viable candidates where they can be found. McGuffey seems to be the real deal according to Cincinnati politicos, so hopefully she can dump a centrist and move Hamilton County in a better direction.
OHIO WESLEYAN PAUSES RELATIONSHIP WITH METHODIST CHURCH OVER LGBTQ RIGHTS
Ohio Wesleyan University has had a 177-year(!) relationship with the Methodist Church. That will end this year due to the sachems of the Methodist Church deciding to remain in 1842 by banning gay clergy and same-sex marriage.
From Adora Nomigadde of wosu.org:
Ohio Wesleyan University's president says the school is taking a "one-year pause in its relationship" with the United Methodist Church in the wake of a worldwide meeting that upheld a ban on same-sex marriage. The moving is coming just after Baldwin Wallace University in Berea cut ties entirely with the church.
The United Methodist Church held its General Conference in February, where hundreds of delegates from around the world voted to continue a ban on the ordainment and marriage of the church's LGBTQ members.
Ohio Wesleyan, a private liberal arts school with about 1,500 students, was founded in 1842 by Methodist ministers. University president Rock Jones says he was disappointed in the results of the conference, but he's hopeful the church will change its mind - or be forced to divide.
Looks like I’ll have to purchase a Battlin’ Bishops t-shirt. I’ve always respected the name/logo, and now I respect their principals. It’s a shame the Methodist Church decided to go the other way; how they got that hate in their heart after reading about the life of Jesus is beyond me.
THOSE WMDs. How this one font took over the world (correct link)… Should you start a newsletter? Maybe, buddy… Anarchists flooded the office of a Portland lawyer who represents the ICE union… Cop working at high school revealed as white nationalist organizer… President Deals’ world still faces 16 criminal probes.
