The Death March Trudges On
Who could have seen that ending unemployment benefits wouldn't force people back to work?
The federal government added a paltry $300 a week to unemployment benefits during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the meager offerings, it was a rare time when the federal government actually showed empathy for people that actually have to work for a living.
That lasted until June, at least in Ohio. That was when Governor Mike DeWine and the state’s Republican leadership decided that extra $300 a week in unemployment insurance was keeping hundreds of thousands of Ohioans from returning to underpaying jobs that offered threadbare benefits, if any at all.
Whereas the Democratic Party shows an indifference to working class concerns, the Republican Party takes sadistic pleasure in fucking over poor people, who they’ve effectively brainwashed their voters into thinking are the root of all evil within America.
Cutting the extra $300 in weekly unemployment insurance was unnecessarily cruel in the best of circumstances. But now we have proof that the cruelty didn’t even work in forcing Ohioans back to work.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that ending the free money from the federal goverment “did little” to get people back to work, going so far as saying the state is short roughly 225,000 workers from the pre-pandemic workforce.
I guess the state’s $50 million advertising blitz pitching Ohio’s 0% corporate tax rate to places where people actually want to live has done little to bridge that gap, either.
All the Republicans did was screw thousands of people out of survival money. Dollars they would have spent on normal things like would have flowed from federal coffers directly into our economy.
Will Republicans face any ramifications for the unnecessary cruelty that actively harmed our economy? No.
Will this stop them from pretending they’re Christians who understand Jesus’ message of needing to clothe the poor and feed the hungry? Also no.
In fact, they’ll simply pin all our problems on Joe Biden and inflation. Just like they have by welcoming anti-vaxers into the party coalition and while Biden for failure to control the pandemic.
You can’t look at these charts and come to any other conclusion:
They’ve spent the last two years actively killing their voters, so fucking over poor people “who didn’t want to work” is what they consider a normal Tuesday afternoon.
You can’t vote against the death cult, they’ve made sure of that through the laserlike gerrymandering of the state. You can’t sue the death cult because they control all levels of the courts. The only hope is to acquire enough wealth to spark an armed revolution or move to a state that hasn’t snuffed out any semblance of democracy.
Because if you stay in Ohio and you’re poor, the death cult will gleefully grind you into dust while their voters praise them for doing the Lord’s work. Hallelujah and amen!
